First home matches

Our first home matches of the season were a friendly with Dunfermline and Hillfoots coming to the KGV, strong performances and wins for all teams.....match reports as below:

P3 By Ian Clark

Having trained the day before, the Kinross boys were itching to get stuck into their second week of touch rugby games today. However both visitors normally train on Sunday and were keen for some warm-up games and a few practice drills…….much to the dismay of our boys (and coaches!!). Regardless, everyone had a lot of fun playing sharks and fishes, toilet tig and then a one-on-one drill.

Due to the numbers from the three clubs we split into 4 mixed teams (albeit one of them was all-Kinross??) and once the matches finally commenced the home players demonstrated their significant progress in the last few weeks with some (generally) straight running and fantastic passing and, more importantly, displayed signs of some organisation in defence. It would be fair to say that the Kinross boys stood out in all aspects and if we all keep sticking in at training we should have a great season ahead…already looking forward to the next "match". Keep it going lads.

After last weeks performance we focused on cutting out missed tackles and improving our defence across the board. We feel we are a very good team with the ball in hand and benefit from players direct running styles and others very quick feet!!
Our first game was against HillfootsB team. We started well with some direct running from Jamie and Charlie, backed up by Finn, Henry and Tom carried on from where he left off last week. We seemed to make the most of possession and make it very difficult for Hilforts to score when they had the ball with tackles going in from every single player. In the end a more than comfortable win which was well deserved
Our second game saw us play Hillfoots A, a slight better organised team with a bigger runner or two and some slightly faster opposition. From a coaches point of view we welcomed the stiffer test. The P4 seemed to easily match them in the first half and we made some good substitutions in the second half to give everyone some very useful experience.
Our last game saw us play a very raw but useful Dunfermline side. A lot of them had very little rugby experience but had some good individuals. Our tackling stepped up and keeps improving. With hard hits from Charlie, Tom and Henry, they were forced to spread the ball wide and we were very pleased with notable performances in defence from Josh, Lucy and Archie stopped a runner or two.
We think this team is growing week to week and relishing the Melrose challenge next week. Still improving everyone, keep up the good work!!!

Wow, what a difference a week makes. Last week we were a bit ring rusty, this week we were well up for it. The attacking skills on show today were great. Handling, off-loading, and recycling at the breakdown were all executed well.
The main difference today though was when we didn’t have the ball. The tackling was greatly improved, and the defensive line moved up quickly after the tap, we even won a few balls on the floor by rucking over. :-)
We played both Dunfermline and Hillfoots twice, scores as follows.
Kinross 6 – 3 Dunfermline
Kinross 6 – 4 Hillfoots
Kinross 5 – 3 Dunfermline
Kinross 7 – 2 Hillfoots
The last game against Hillfoots was where we really shined.
Kinross really got into the faces of Hillfoots when they had the ball, getting up fast, with strong early tackles, and making them go backwards. This resulted in several turnovers, and is shown in the score, only allowing Hillfoots over our line twice. Hopefully the team will realise that this is the way forward and keep it up.
Great effort today guys, you should all be really proud of yourselves. If we produce similar stuff next week at Melrose we should do really well. Also big thanks to Ollie and Rusty, and all the parents who helped out, as well as the mums and dads shouting encouragement from the sidelines. See you all at training on Saturday, then Melrose on Sunday.

Good strong performance from the P6’s this week, on the full size pitch we threw the ball wide at every opportunity and started to play more heads up rugby as the coaching team had asked, allowing space to be utilised. We played Dunfermline first with good defence being the difference between the teams. We ran out comfortable 7-0 winners. Against Hillfoots, which gave us a more sterner game, we rucked hard and again our wide play paid off. final score 6-2.

In the final game we had a mixed up match with all three teams playing in the same match. All in all another good week in advance of our defense of the Melrose tournament next week.
